Malaysia Coral Reef and Turtle Conservation
After you take, or upgrade your PADI on the beautiful island of Tioman, you will have the chance to take part in Reef Check surveys, or to dive or snorkel in search of dazzling marine life, be part of a truly incredible turtle experience, discover the island and relax on its golden sandy beaches.
Volunteer RoleThis project is focused on coral reef conservation and dives with an amazing turtle experience in the second week and consisting of three main parts:
- PADI Certification
(Open Water or Advanced, either of these two courses are included in the project cost. If you wish to do further training this can also be arranged in advance for you at an additional cost.)
- Turtle Experience
During this time you will be based at a resort, which has a licensed hatchery. You will be working with a Department of Fisheries egg collector and a project member of staff. At night you may accompany them by boat to collect the eggs laid by the turtles on nearby beaches. Your job will then be to monitor the eggs and release any hatchlings ready to go to sea.
- Reef Check Survey
The final element of the programme will involve doing reef check training, concluding with a Reef Check Survey in the fourth week. Reef Check is a vital global marine conservation programme and without Reef Check we would not be able to gauge the status of coral, let alone develop policy and laws to protect it. These reports are hugely significant in advising on global and national policy on protection of reefs. You will scuba dive in some of the finest diving sites in the world and encounter amazing tropical marine life. During your dives you may even catch sight of turtles, and if you do there will be the opportunity to observe and monitor them.
LocationThe program is located on the largest marine park island in Malaysia, Pulau Tioman, off the East Coast of Malaysia.
Accommodation and MealsYour first night will be in a hostel dorm in Kuala Lumpur. On the island, your accommodation is situated on the longest expanse of inhabited golden sandy beach on the West Coast of Tioman. The accommodation in Tioman will be in a wooden chalet with a maximum of three people sharing.
Breakfast will be included and consists of toast, tea and coffee. When you arrive you will be given a food allowance that will cover lunch and dinner whilst on the island. Food here is delicious and meals available will be of Malay, Chinese and Indian cuisine and sometimes a fusion of all three! Dishes of vegetables, rice and noodles are the norm. Vegetarian meals are often difficult to get in isolated areas, but widely available in Kuala Lumpur.
