Volunteers fly in to Kuala Lumpur airport where they will be met and taken to a welcome dinner with project supervisors and other volunteers. You will be given full details regarding the project at an orientation briefing which takes place soon after your arrival.

You will also have time to explore Kuala Lumpur before you set off for the zoo.

Volunteer Role

Working alongside the zookeeper, volunteers are responsible for the daily care of the animals and will ‘learn on the job’ as they clean, feed and look after the animals living quarters.  By the time they leave, volunteers will be familiar with the behavior of each animal and may feel confident enough to work as a zoo guide to tourists and school children.

Volunteers often get involved with the general maintenance of the zoo and may be asked to improve signage around the site, build new exhibits or help catch animals who need to be treated by the zoo vet.

Project Location

Real Gap places volunteers in one of two zoos:

Zoo Negara - This is the national zoo of Malaysia and is situated just 20 minutes outside Kuala Lumpur.

Taiping Zoo - This zoo is located three hours (drive) from Kuala Lumpur in the state of Perak in the Lake Gardens of Taiping Town.  Perak is on Malaysia's western coast and extends far into the peninsula.  Perak’s eastern border is marked by the Main Range Mountains.

Accommodation & Meals

Zoo Negara - Volunteers are housed in a three bedroom property which is located on-site in the zoo.

Taiping Zoo – Volunteers stay within walking distance of the zoo in a standard hotel room with en-suite bathroom.

Work at the zoo comes to a halt at 10.30am when the staff and volunteers enjoy a huge breakfast.  Lunch is not usually provided, but, if peckish, volunteers can stock up at the zoo restaurant or local shop which is within walking distance.

Good wholesome Malay cuisine is provided on-site at the zoo.  Off-site, volunteers can either choose to self cater or take advantage of the cheap meals out (a full meal costs between £1 and £2 RELEVANT?.)
