This ten-day hiking tour includes hiking over rugged mountains, exploring the spectacular coast, kayaking in Milford Sound and gazing at the amazing and awesome glaziers and waterfalls. This area is one of New Zealand’s most varied, beautiful and interesting hiking destinations.

The Programme

This program begins with four days hiking in the rocky mountains of Fiordland National Park and kayaking on stunning alpine lakes with beautiful mountain views.  You can spend time kayaking beneath massive sea cliffs in Milford Sound while looking out for leaping dolphins and basking seals.

You will then shown and allowed to explore the spectacular Catlins coast, with its beautiful beaches, fossilized trees, luxuriant rain forest and lots of wildlife including its rare species of dolphins, sea lions and yellow-eyed penguins.  You will as a group hike up the rocky slopes of the Ohau range and have the opportunity to look down on turquoise glacial lakes and the snow-capped peaks of Mt Cook.  You can also explore the extraordinary volcanic landscape of Mt Somers with its many waterfalls and narrow canyons.

Location

NZ South Island. Begin in Queenstown, end tour in Christchurch.

Accommodation and Meals

You will be offered a variety of accommodation including back-country huts, camping, cribs (summer house), cabins and hostels.

The cost of accommodation isn’t included in the price and varies depending on the type of accommodation. When the weather is good you will be camping which is a far cheaper option. If the weather isn’t so pleasant you may be staying in huts or cabins.

Tour food will be on a pooled-money system so each person needs to contribute $10 per day. Meals consist of barbecues, pasta, salads, rice etc. It’s a good idea to take lots of high energy food (such as chocolate, nuts etc).
