After all this effort, it is upsetting to hear that the eggs are considered a gastronomic delicacy by the locals and are collected to be sold in the nearby markets for a high price.

The Volunteer Project

This program asks volunteers to collect and record data to help protect the newly laid eggs and the future of the green turtle species.

You will be involved in the following:

Turtle M
onitoring
Volunteers are kept busy counting and watching green turtles as they land at the inlet.  Volunteers also patrol the beach on alternate nights’ map areas and make observational notes on data sheets while checking for turtles laying eggs in sand nests.

Beach Care
Volunteers are asked to help preserve the river creek to ensure that the turtles have easy access to the beach to lay their eggs. A small amount of beach clearing is also required as sea detritus (rubbish, drift wood and seaweed) is often washed up on the beach overnight.

Dive Courses
Volunteers take part in a dive course in weeks one to three.  The course you take will depend on your previous dive experience, but the offered courses include: Rescue Diver PADI. Advanced Open Water PADI, Emergency First Responder and Open Water PADI.

Project Location

The program is situated in a remote cove on the stunning Perhentian Islands, a few miles off the east coast of the mainland of Malaysia.  The location is a natural nesting place for green turtles.  The snorkeling for shore and boat divers is excellent with stunning marine life and beautiful coral reefs.  The islands provide travelers with a superb opportunity to chill and relax!

Accommodation & Meals

Volunteers are housed in wooden chalets equipped with fans and en-suite western style bathrooms. The huts are less than 20 meters from the beach.  It is very tempting to sleep on the beach, and for this reason, we recommend you bring your own sleeping bag, towels and mosquito net.
